If you open a bag of mixed nuts of different sizes, you will see that the largest nuts are at the top of the bag. And now researchers know why.
Researchers from The University of Manchester have takes a closer look at the phenomenon by performing 3D X-ray scans of a bag of nuts and creating a three-dimensional interval video of the movements of the nuts as the bag is shaken.
Video shows the nuts moving
The researchers discovered that with each shaking of the bag, the large Brazil nuts increasingly changed position from horizontal to vertical and began to move upwards in the pile of nuts.

As soon as the Brazil nuts had ended up vertically, it became easier for the smaller nuts to fall down into the bag and thus free up space for the larger Brazil nuts at the top.
After about 70 shakes of the bag, the first Brazil nut reached the top tenth of the nut collection. The Brazil nuts that lay too far down in the bag to be able to change their original horizontal angle, however, did not move out of the stain.
Nut blend can be used in industry
The research result is not just a fun fact that you can entertain the family with the next time you open a bag of mixed nuts. According to the researchers, it can be beneficial for the industry, for example in the construction and medical industry.
There, the engineers with the correct design of materials can ensure that they are evenly mixed with each other instead of being stored.
