Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Germany have examined the responses of a six-month-old toddler when viewing images of spiders. Apart from the spider, the baby was also shown pictures of flowers, snakes and fish.

During the study, the baby’s pupil will be measured to see the level of noropinephrine which can measure the baby’s stress level. The result, when toddlers looked at the spider image, the pupil was dilated on average 0.14 millimeters (mm). Meanwhile, when the baby saw the flower, the pupil dilation was only 0.03 mm.

“We conclude that the fear of spiders stems from human evolution,” says neurologist Stefanie Hoehl of the Max Planck Institute.
