Children are often afraid of the dark. How did it happen?

Bobo.id – Guys, do you feel afraid when in the dark?

Most children also experience fear when in dark and lonely places.

Children prefer to play when it is day and light, together with friends.

On the other hand, the older a human becomes, the more he will be able to face his fears and no longer worry about the dark.

Why is that, huh? What are the scientific reasons and explanations?

Launching from page National Geographic, let’s find out why together!

Descended from Human Ancestor

Humans continue to develop and undergo evolution, therefore there are ancient humans and modern humans.

Early humans are called the ancestors of modern humans, they were the first to discover the basic science we learn today.

So is fear. Fear was taught by our ancestors in ancient times.

Our fear of the dark is an evolutionary trait our ancestors did to defend ourselves from predators.

What is the nature of evolution? Evolution is change that is done slowly, or little by little.

Alertness Forms Fear

In ancient times, humans only had fire and celestial bodies as lights at night.

Under these circumstances, humans must be able to guard against wild animals and other dangers that can be found in the dark.

As we know, most of the carnivorous predatory animals prefer to hunt at night.

Because of that, the human ancestor had already formed a sense of vigilance in him every night and darkness.

Fear of the dark is actually a fear of the unknown.

We just keep imagining things that aren’t necessarily in the dark.

Just as early humans were on guard against the arrival of wild beasts, so we feel the same fear when it is dark.

How the Brain Works When It’s Dark

When suddenly the lights go out, the imagination in our brains is growing.

Therefore, thoughts arise that make us feel afraid and anxious.

And as that anxiety increases, the brain will control our visual and auditory senses to become more active.

That is, whatever we see and hear when it is dark will feel clearer.

The part of the brain called the amygdala, which regulates the feelings of fear we feel.

The amygdala in children is not well developed, so we often feel afraid.

Meanwhile, at the age of twelve, the amygdala and the forebrain are increasingly connected so that they can manage fear.

Well, that is the reason why we are more easily afraid of the dark as children than adults.
