Why Apple could sell the next iPhone without charger

For the first time, the Californian brand is preparing to deliver iPhones without integrating a charger in the box. Headphones would also be put aside, at least in most countries.

After being the first to remove the headphone jack, Apple could once again take the lead by no longer offering a charger in the box of its next iPhone, expected in September. The prediction comes from a note written by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, whose information is among the most reliable, cited by the site 9to5Mac. It supports a previous forecast evoking future iPhones without wired headphones, at least in some countries: the addition of a hands-free kit in the box by smartphone manufacturers is mandatory in France.

An economic .. and ecological sense?

For Apple, the fact of no longer including a charger with its iPhone could have several advantages. First of all, reduce its costs to compensate for the compatibility of its next mobiles with 5G, whose associated components are much more expensive than those allowing to connect in 4G. A strategy that would notably keep the price of the iPhone 12 at the level of that of the iPhone 11, sold from 809 euros.

The firm would realize in passing other substantial savings: the absence of charger would reduce the size of the iPhone box, and therefore the costs of transport and storage.

The removal of the charger could also take on a marketing meaning for Apple, which has been pressing the ecological fiber of its customers for several years. A significant number of smartphone buyers already have a charger in their possession. Not providing it could thus be seen as a way to reduce the carbon footprint of the iPhone, and potential waste. A similar reasoning could be put forward concerning the headphones.

If this choice is confirmed, Apple could however integrate a charging cable in the box (sold 25 euros as an accessory), in order to charge its iPhone through a USB-C port, for example thanks to a MacBook . Customers who do not have a charger should then buy the AC adapter, available today for 35 euros. Wired headphones are sold for 29 euros.
