The show takes place one late evening, when George and Martha, a married couple in their middle age, invite a university colleague and his new wife to visit. Feasts, games of love and hate begin, the rules of which George and Martha follow as a sacred ritual. The cruel wit exchanged by the landlords is unexpectedly replaced by seemingly true flashes of love.
The light and shadow sides of the personality, dreams and unfulfilled illusions prevent the characters in the play from perceiving reality as it is, giving in to anger and denial. But every living entity has a potential for goodness that he can awaken to help himself and others.
Director Inese Mičule: “It seems to me that the play accurately reveals a person’s irreconcilable struggle with himself. Offenses and egocentrism, no matter how familiar they may be, are not the essence of it. I believe that everyone has the potential for goodness and can awaken it. It seems that we must learn in the world today not to hold on to our fears, prejudices, old resentments and illusions.
In the creative team, set designer Mārtiņš Vilkārsis, costume designer Anna Heinrihsone, lighting artist Gatis Priednieks – Melnacis, movement consultant Alise Putniņa, translated by Jānis Elsbergs.
