But how did the historic Classic of Classics come about? It all goes back to the typical anecdote of the millionaire team against the representative of the people, who was not only that, but also did it with pure Mexican players. The first confrontation dates back to October 10, 1926, when América toured Guadalajara and they met in three matches, the starter ended 1-1 with goals from ‘Chato’ Aceves and Guillermo Hyder.

Already professionally speaking, time had to pass until January 16, 1944, when they were measured in long tournaments. Chivas won the first leg by a score of 3-1, but in the second leg America nailed the most scandalous win in the history of the National Classic, a resounding 7-2 that set a precedent.

The rivalry was born in the 58-59 season, when América beat Chivas 0-2 as a visitor and the azulcrema coach declared that the new side to score against Guadalajara was 2-0. From then on, the confrontations between Águilas and Rojiblancos took on hints of revenge in each green rectangle they stepped on.
