Who will take over the Celtics? Jeff Bezos’ interest fades

Amazon’s billionaire founder Jeff Bezos recently sparked speculation that he might be buying a majority stake in the Boston Celtics. However, this rumor quickly faded. Well-known sports analyst Bill Simmons had rekindled the hype by suggesting Bezos’ interest, but The Information’s Nick Wingfield quickly debunked it, saying that Bezos had “no plans” to bid and that Simmons’ claim had “zero truth to it.”

This shift raises questions about the future ownership of the Celtics. Wyc Grousbeck’s search for a new majority owner continues, leaving fans pondering the potential pros and cons of different ownership scenarios.

In one case, Bezos could provide a substantial financial investment, potentially transforming the franchise. On the other hand, Bezos’ absence could pave the way for a more locally connected figure, such as Steve Pagliuca, a current co-owner instrumental in the team’s 18th championship banner.

Boston Sports Tonight co-host Michael Felger expressed disappointment at Bezos’ rumored retirement. “I’m fascinated by this story and disappointed as a media guy and a talk show host in this town that Bezos is out,” Felger said. He imagined Bezos as the ultimate outsider, considering grandiose changes like building a state-of-the-art “Amazon Dome” for the Celtics — echoing Steve Ballmer’s vision for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Despite the allure of potential futuristic developments, practical challenges — such as the Celtics’ current 15-year lease with TD Garden — might have deterred Bezos. Still, Felger suggested that Bezos’ involvement could have sparked intriguing conversations about the franchise’s future. “It would be so fascinating to see him try, and the fact that he’s out, as a media guy, I’m disappointed,” Felger shared.

At this time, no other potential buyers have come forward. Felger’s co-host on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Tony Massarotti, noted that Fenway Sports Group’s John Henry appears to be uninterested, leaving Steve Pagliuca as the leading candidate. Pagliuca’s continued involvement could ensure continuity, offering a stable transition for the Celtics.

As the saga continues, Celtics fans and stakeholders alike eagerly await further developments. Bezos’ potential involvement tantalized many, hinting at significant change and excitement. Instead, attention may shift to local figures with existing ties to the franchise and city. This evolving narrative promises to keep fans and analysts on their toes as they speculate on the next strategic move for the legendary Boston Celtics.
