Mexico elects first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum

Claudia Sheinbaum is the first woman to be elected as Mexico’s president. The former Mexico City mayor won nearly 60% of the vote.

The solemn Protest Ceremony of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as the first president of Mexico this October 1, 2024 will be one for the ages.

It will begin at 11 am (center), when the president of the General Congress, Ifigenia Martínez Hernández, asks the president-elect to take oath before the Honorable Congress of the Union as Constitutional President of the United Mexican States.

Immediately, the outgoing president, Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, will present the Presidential Band first to Martínez Hernández who in turn will deliver it to Sheinbaum, now as Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, so that she can wear it herself.

Martínez Hernández will then give the floor to Sheinbaum, who will use the platform to address his first message to the Nation.

What does the Presidential Band represent?

The Presidential Band constitutes a form of representation of the National Flag and is an emblem of the Federal Executive Branch, so it can only be carried by the president of the Republic, as established in Article 34 of the Law on the Shield, the National Flag and Anthem.

In accordance with Article 34, the Band “will have the colors of the National Flag in stripes of equal width placed longitudinally, the green color corresponding to the upper strip. It will carry the National Shield on the three colors, embroidered in gold thread, at the height of the wearer’s chest, and the ends of the Band will be finished with a gold fringe.”

How is the Presidential Band placed?

“The Presidential Band must be placed from the right shoulder to the left side, under the jacket and joined at waist level, except in the ceremony of transmission of the Federal Executive Power, in which it will successively be worn, completely uncovered, by the outgoing President. and the incoming one”, as established in Article 36 of the Law on the National Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem.

In accordance with Article 37 of this, in the ceremony of transmission of the Federal Executive Power, once the incoming president has rendered the constitutional protest, the outgoing president will deliver the Band to the president of the Congress of the Union, who will place it in the hands of the president of the Republic so that she is the one who appoints it to herself.

Why will Ifigenia Martínez give the Presidential Sash to Claudia Sheinbaum?

The representative and economist Ifigenia Martínez Hernández is the one who will present the Presidential Band to Sheinbaum since she was appointed as president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies for the first year of the LXVI Legislature.

In October 2021, Martínez Hernández received the Belisario Domínguez Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the Mexican State and the Senate of the Republic. She is recognized as one of the first economists to carry out studies on economic and social inequality in Mexico.

What is Claudia Sheinbaum’s relationship with Ifigenia Martínez?

For Sheinbaum, Martínez Hernández represents a woman who, throughout history, opened a gap for many women and who has been consistent in the fight for the democratization of Mexico.

In the last presidential election, Sheinbaum revealed that he voted for her symbolically.

“She is a very consistent woman. Her performance as director of the Faculty of Economics in ’68; at the time it was part of the Democratic Current in 87; and since ’88, it has been very consistent. Who is Ifigenia Martínez?

Ifigenia Martínez Hernández was born on June 16, 1930. At 94 years old, she is recognized as one of the first economists to carry out studies on economic and social inequality in Mexico. She has a degree, master’s degree and doctorate in economics from UNAM and is the first Mexican to obtain a master’s degree in economics at Harvard University.

In 1967 she was the first director of the National School of Economics at UNAM. In 1968 she was one of the main defenders of UNAM after the army invasion of Ciudad Universitaria.

Together with Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas and Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, he headed the Democratic Current and later participated as a founding member of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

On October 7, 2021, he received the Belisario Domínguez Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the Mexican State and the Senate of the Republic.
