Who was Ibrahim Akil who was targeted by Israel in the attack on Beirut – 2024-09-22 16:17:14

Hezbollah’s top commander Ibrahim Akil, along with two other high-ranking Hezbollah officials, were targeted in today’s air strike in Beirut. Akil was second in command of Hezbollah’s armed wing, behind Fouad Shukr, who was also killed in an Israeli strike in July.

Ten senior Hezbollah commanders along with Ibrahim Akil were killed in the Israeli raid according to the IDF spokesman.

Aqil, also known as Tahsin, was an executive in Hezbollah’s highest military body, the Jihad Council. He was also the head of the elite Al Radwan force, the organization’s top military unit.

The Radwan Force was created after the Second Lebanon War in 2006 and the aim of its formation is to strengthen Hezbollah’s offensive capabilities. The unit is primarily responsible for ground warfare, including high-risk missions such as infiltrating Israeli territory.

In the 1980s, Akil was a key member of Hezbollah’s terrorist cell, the Islamic Jihad Organization, which had claimed responsibility for the bombings of the US embassy in Beirut in April 1983, which killed 63 people, and the barracks of the US Marine Corps in October 1983, where 241 Americans were killed. Since then Akil has been on the wanted list of terrorists and was even recently rewarded with 7 million dollars. The US had designated him as a Global Terrorist in 2019 as a result of his involvement in multiple terrorist plots, including the kidnapping of national officials in the 1980s.
