WHO warns that ‘measles’ cases will rise to more than 10 million worldwide by 2023

AFP news agency reports from Geneva. Switzerland on November 15, from a joint document published by the World Health Organization. According to the WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there will be approximately 10.3 million cases of measles worldwide in 2023.

That number is up 20% from 2022 as the global vaccine builds. It is not covered enough to drive the number of infected people to skyrocket.

In 2023, only 83% of children worldwide received their first dose of measles vaccine through general health services. This is the same as 2022 levels but down from the 86% level before the pandemic.

In addition, studies show that only 74% received the second dose of their vaccine in the past year.

Global vaccine coverage gaps mean that 57 countries will experience large and severe measles outbreaks in 2023, up from 36 the previous year.

The report says that the pandemic has affected every region except America. Almost half of these occurred in the African region. Measles is expected to kill 107,500 people in 2023, with the majority under the age of five, down 8 percent from the previous year.

WHO warns that global goal to eliminate measles To eliminate diseases by 2030, “at risk”

At the end of last year, 82 countries had eliminated or maintained measles. except in the African region. There is only at least 1 country that has successfully eradicated the disease.
