The COVID-19 virus has not disappeared. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), recent data from 84 countries show an increase in confirmed cases in recent weeks. At least 40 Olympic athletes tested positive in Paris, demonstrating the persistence of this infectious disease.
“Contrary to popular perception, COVID-19 has not disappeared. The more the virus circulates, the more likely it is to mutate and become more severe,” said Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Director of Epidemic and Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness. These comments, based on scientific evidence, underscore the importance of remaining vigilant.
Global increase in cases
Global data show a 10% increase in positive diagnostic tests, with significant regional variations. In Europe, cases increased by 20% in the middle of summer, leading to a spike in hospitalizations and deaths.
Unlike other respiratory viruses that spread more in winter, COVID-19 spreads regardless of climate and temperature, as demonstrated by cases among Olympic athletes in Paris.
Prevention and preparation
WHO stresses the importance of continuing to invest in understanding the circulation of the virus and protecting populations. Governments must prepare for a drastic increase in cases of COVID-19 or other emerging or re-emerging pathogens such as avian influenza, dengue fever or mpox.
One of the key preventive measures is the vaccination of risk groups (people over 60, those with chronic diseases and health workers). However, supply problems persist as vaccine production has decreased, with companies doubting the continued demand for these products.
Wastewater analyses reveal that COVID-19 circulation could be up to 20 times higher than officially reported, according to Van Kerkhove. This data underscores the need to remain vigilant and continue prevention and preparedness efforts against the virus.
