WHO: wait with extra shots, vaccines badly needed in poorer countries

WHO CEO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus therefore calls for a stop with the booster vaccine until at least the end of September. Israel had already started giving this (often third) injection and the US, Germany and Hungary, among others, have also announced that they want to give certain groups the injection, partly to tackle the delta variant. The Netherlands has not yet taken a decision on this.

4 billion shots

The WHO says it understands the concerns of these governments, but has previously spoken out against the ‘booster policy’. Of the 4 billion shots taken worldwide to date, more than 80 percent have been given in high- and middle-income countries. The CEO asks everyone with influence, such as athletes, investors, businessmen and religious leaders, to support the call for a vaccination ban.

The US immediately said it would not heed the call. According to a White House spokesperson, there is a “false dilemma” because one does not have to exclude the other. According to her, the US has enough stock to continue to send vaccines to other countries and to give booster vaccines to its own population.
