Who to become New York’s next mayor?

Who will succeed Bill de Blasio? The current mayor of New York cannot run for his own succession as he is completing his second consecutive term, the maximum allowed by city law. And the battle to replace him next November promises to be fierce.

Andrew Yang

He is the most famous candidate for the general public. And for good reason, Andrew Yang was a candidate for the 2020 US presidential election on the Democrats’ side, and succeeded in a longer campaign than envisaged on the side of observers. A fixed idea was at the center of his program: a universal income of 1,000 dollars for every American. After his withdrawal from the campaign was announced, he continued to campaign for the Democrats, and appeared regularly on CNN to analyze the political situation.

Andrew Yang, the internet candidate

The one who became known for his first entrepreneurial career confirmed on January 14 that he was targeting New York City Hall. The Democratic primary will take place on June 22. And as much to say that in this very progressive city, winning the Democratic primary makes you the immense favorite. The last Republican to win was Rudy Giuliani, lawyer for Donald Trump and mayor of New York between 1994 and 2001. According to a poll published by l’Education Reform Now Advocacy (ERNA), Andrew Yang is now the big favorite.

Eric Adams

According to the same opinion poll, Eric Adams is the second choice of New York voters with almost a year before the poll (the election will take place on November 2). A declared candidate since last November, the Brooklyn District President, a former police officer and advocate for the right to bear firearms, is now targeting New York City Hall.

Known to the local public for his sometimes fiery statements, he stands in opposition to Bill de Blasio, very often criticized and at the center of various personal scandals. Politician elected for more than a decade in New York, he could catch up on Andrew Yang thanks to his greater knowledge of the field.

Maya Wiley

Another declared candidate who could climb in the polls: Maya Wiley. The latter worked as an advisor to Bill de Blasio during his mandate, and is a regular on television sets where she intervenes for her legal knowledge as a lawyer.

Her main weak point is never having been elected, and being a novice in the world of politics. Despite her closeness to Bill de Blasio, she did not hesitate to depart from her mentor by calling on her fellow citizens to vote for them if they were tired of having “the same old tune”.

Dianne Morales

Police reform, universal income … The former leader of an NGO offers a very progressive program to be elected in New York. Although many have yet to decide who they will vote for, the ERNA opinion poll places them 5th with 5% of the voting intentions. If won, she would be the first Afro-Hispanic mayor in the city’s history.

Christine Quinn

Christine Quinn has not yet formalized her candidacy. But for all that, several media report a possible announcement in this direction for the former president of the municipal council of the city. It would not be her first candidacy, since she finished third in the Democratic primary in 2013, won by Bill de Blasio. For now, she runs Women in Need, an organization that advocates for homeless mothers in New York City.
