From organized public demonstrations in Washington, DC, to decentralized digital forums, the visible footprint of white nationalist ideology has expanded over recent decades. Yet, quantifying public sympathy for these movements has remained difficult due to a lack of direct, standardized survey instruments. To address this information gap, researchers analyzed data from three national surveys of non-Hispanic white US adults conducted between 2021 and 2025. Funded through academic research grants at NYU, the project surveyed more than 7,800 respondents using explicit descriptions of white nationalism’s core tenets before measuring direct endorsement.
“Young people typically have more liberal views on racial matters, but the opposite is true for white nationalist beliefs among young white men,” explains NYU Professor Patrick Egan, the paper’s lead author and director of NYU’s Berkley Institute for Civil Discourse and Civic Solutions. Egan notes that young men represent historical targets for hard-line recruitment messages across the political spectrum, though whether these views persist as cohorts age remains to be determined through ongoing observation.
In addition to age and gender patterns, the study maps specific economic and political correlates. Backing for white nationalism concentrates among white Republicans, political conservatives, self-described politically disaffected individuals, and those with lower levels of formal education and household income. The findings suggest that structural grievance acts as a primary catalyst for radicalization.
“We found backing for white nationalism was stronger in areas with higher incidences of poverty and unemployment, and for those experiencing personal difficulties like health problems and the loss of loved ones—all of which can create conditions for grievance and resentment,” says James Bisbee, an assistant professor of political science at Vanderbilt University and a co-author of the study.
The investigation also evaluates the role of digital communication. The CSMaP team discovered no direct statistical link between the frequency of general social media consumption and adherence to white nationalist doctrines. However, platform architecture and peer structures matter significantly. Endorsement levels increase sharply among respondents who report that two or three of their three closest confidants are contacts known exclusively via digital networks.
“More frequent social media use was not correlated with higher support for white nationalist ideas,” explains NYU Professor Joshua A. Tucker, co-director of CSMaP and a paper author. “However, endorsement of these ideas is much more prevalent among people for whom two or three of their three closest friends are people they know primarily online, as opposed to offline. One implication of this finding is that online activity may be especially consequential for people who are socially isolated offline, perhaps making it more important to adopt views aligned with their online communities.”
Methodological validation was a core component of the CSMaP project. The authors cross-referenced their direct survey metric with established political science, psychological, and sociological frameworks measuring racial attitudes. Survey experiments embedded within the research design successfully ruled out potential artifacts related to question wording, respondent inattentiveness, acquiescence bias, or priming effects caused by questionnaire placement. Furthermore, administering the questionnaires online in confidential settings minimized social desirability bias, allowing participants to disclose personal views without fear of immediate social repercussion.
Understanding the pathways of ideological radicalization and grievance requires rigorous behavioral assessment, much like addressing complex public health challenges that stem from social isolation and economic distress.
As white nationalism maintains a persistent presence in contemporary public discourse, the methodological framework established by the NYU team offers a baseline for future epidemiological and sociological inquiries. Researchers intend to utilize these validated measures over time to monitor shifts in the prevalence and underlying predictors of extremist sentiment within American society.
