TRIBUNNEWS.COM, GENEVA – World Health Organization or WHO see no signs of a pandemic yet Covid-19 will end soon.
“The global reality is that the pandemic is far from over,” said the Director General WHOTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, while giving a guest lecture at Cambridge University, England, Tuesday (1/3/2022).
He revealed that since the beginning of this year, an average of more than 60,000 people have died per week as a result of Covid-19.
“And of course, the threat remains from the emergence of new variants (coronavirus) that are more infectious, more virulent, and less susceptible to vaccines,” Tedros said.
According to him, the effects of the pandemic go far beyond the death and illness that the coronavirus causes.
The health system has been severely disrupted, with millions of people deprived of essential services.
“As you well know, millions of people have lost their jobs or have fallen into poverty. The global economy is still trying to get out of recession. Political divisions are deepening,” he said.
Tedros says, Covid-19 is a brutal demonstration that a pandemic is more than a health crisis.
“It touches every area of life: economy, education, family, work, business, technology, commerce, travel, tourism, politics, security and many more,” he explained.
“When health is threatened, everything is at risk,” he added.
