WHO says second Ebola outbreak in Guinea is over

World Health Organization (World Health Organisation/WHO) on Saturday (19/6) officially announced the end of the second Ebola outbreak in Guinea. The outbreak was declared in February and has killed 12 people.

According to WHO data, there are 16 confirmed cases and seven suspected infections. The latest low number of cases stems from the experience of the 2013-16 epidemic, which killed more than 11,300 people, mostly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Only 12 people died this time.

“I have the honor to declare the end of Ebola,” in Guinea, WHO office Alfred Ki-Zerbo said at a ceremony in the Nzerekore area, where the disease appeared in late January.

International regulations require Guinea to wait 42 days or twice the virus incubation period without new cases before declaring the epidemic over.

A senior Guinean Health Ministry official told AFP the wait was over Friday, weeks after the last patient was declared cured on May 8. [vm/ft]
