WHO Says Covid Will Stay With Us, Mutation Like Ordinary Flu

Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaCovid-19 is likely to stay with humanity for a long time. This is because the virus continues to mutate in countries that do not have or lack access to vaccines.

World Health Organization (WHO) even said that Covid would continue to spread like influenza. Eradicating corona is something that is impossible.

“I think this virus is here to stay with us and will evolve like a pandemic influenza virus. It will evolve into one of the other viruses that affect us,” said WHO Health Emergencies Program Executive Director Dr. Mike Ryan in the latest WHO press conference, Tuesday (8/9/2021).

“People say we will eliminate or eradicate the virus. But we say no, very, very unlikely.”

The WHO Technical Leader for Covid-19, Maria Van Kerkhove, also emphasized the same thing. He said this was caused by a lack of global anticipation at the beginning of the spread of the corona virus.

The whole world never expected the magnitude of the transmission of the virus. “We actually had an opportunity at the beginning of the last pandemic. This pandemic need not be as bad as it is now,” he said.

The situation is getting worse because many rich countries are now doing ‘hoarding’ of Covid-19 virus vaccines, treatments and protective equipment. One of them recklessly injects an alias amplifier booster Covid-19 vaccine for its citizens.

Whereas vaccines can be prioritized for citizens of poor countries. This condition may make the target of 10% of the world’s population to be vaccinated at the end of September, let alone 40% of global citizens in December 2021.

“It’s not just unfair. It’s not just immoral. It prolongs the pandemic,” said van Kerkhove, WHO Technical Lead for Covid-19. “It resulted in people dying.”

The US has immunized 53% of its population with two full doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. But since last week Booster has been given to more than 1.3 million people.

The European Union has completely inoculated 57% of the population. But boosters are also now being provided by France and England to their citizens.

This is different from Africa. The continent has only vaccinated 3% of the population with 26 new countries distributing less than half of their total vaccines.

Covid-19 has been endemic since December 2019. Since then 222,715,551 people have been infected with the death toll reaching 4,598,372.
