Rob Butler, a spokesman for the organization, said a sad line reached one and a half million people in Europe last week with Covid-19 deaths. Europe is the only region in the world where the number of infections has continued to rise since mid-October, up 11 percentage points in the last 7 days.
Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure, but wearing a face mask can also prevent infection, the WHO spokesman said. Butler cited a study showing a reduction in Covid-19 cases of 53%. In the European region, masks are used by only 48% of the population.
The representative of the organization also confirms the data provided by individual countries. In the Czech Republic, for example, the cumulative weekly rate of Covid-19 is again over 1,000, while in Russia, more than 1,200 people die with Covid-19 each. The situation in the Baltic States has stabilized, but there is no room for great optimism.
Already in early November, the WHO warned that if the disease continues to spread rapidly, then In Europe and Central Asia until 1 February from complications caused by the virus another half a million people could die.
