WHO Recommendation for Dengue Vaccines: Details and Impact on Disease Curve in Our Country

Taking into account that in our country one of the most present diseases, especially in spring and summer, is dengue, the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) on the application of vaccines to avoid serious cases has attracted attention, and in this sense, Mr. Luis Cousirat, director of the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI), commented on the details of said proposal. He did it in conversation with the program “Dos en la Ciudad”, broadcast by Universo 970 AM / Nación Media.

He explained that it is a quadrivalent vaccine, which has effectiveness studies against four serotypes and its application is indicated in two doses, the first upon contact and the second three months later. Likewise, he recalled that neighboring countries with Brazil and Argentina already have the health registry, but that in our country no private laboratory has shown interest.

“The WHO recommendation comes precisely for a specific group of the population, which would be children, from 6 to 16 years of age, which is the group most affected worldwide and looking at the data at the global level. country, that age range coincides with our current situation,” Mr. Luis Cousirat commented during the interview.

“According to studies, the immune response to the vaccine is better in people who have had contact at some point in their lives with some serotype of virus, and it also prevents cases of severe infections by 82%,”

stressed the director of the PAI, while highlighting that having this vaccine would help a lot to stop the disease curve in our country in the coming years.

On the other hand, he indicated that taking into account the current situation in the country, regarding dengue, they are working to define the burden of the disease and which target group the vaccine will be introduced.

The predominance of hospitalized patients occurs in the age group 5 to 14 years. Emphasis is placed on the elimination of breeding sites in home, educational, recreational and work environments, the use of repellent and mosquito nets, the application of supervision filters, as well as timely consultation and rest to reduce the impact of the epidemic.
