WHO: Omicron has milder symptoms, affects the upper respiratory tract

More evidence is already emerging that the coronavirus Omicron variant affects the upper respiratory tract. At the same time, it causes milder symptoms than previous variants. This was stated on Tuesday by a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), quoted by Reuters.

“We are seeing more and more studies showing that Omicron affects the upper respiratory tract, unlike other coronavirus variants that can cause severe pneumonia,” Abdi Mahamoud of the WHO told reporters in Geneva.

After the holidays, the “tsunami of Omicron” from Western Europe is expected in Bulgaria

According to a WHO study, 48% of Bulgarians can be persuaded to get vaccinated

According to him, this may be “good news”.

At the same time, the high tolerability of Omicron means that in many places this coronavirus variant will become dominant within weeks and that’s it a threat to countries where a large part of the population is still unvaccinated.

Mahamud said it was too early to say whether Omicron required a specific vaccine, but stressed that the decision requires global coordination and should not be left to the commercial sector to decide for itself.

His remarks on the reduced risk of serious illness are combined with other data, including a study from South Africa, which was one of the first countries where Omicron was discovered.
