WHO: No Evidence To Show Monkeypox Virus Has Mutated

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has no evidence that the monkeypox virus (Monkeypox) has mutated.

This statement was conveyed by the Head of the Smallpox Secretariat which is part of the Emergency Program WHORosamund Lewis on Monday (23/5/2022) yesterday.

He noted, the infectious disease that has been endemic in West and Central Africa is likely to remain unchanged.

Quoted from the page Reuters, Tuesday (24/5/2022), Lewis said that the mutation potential of this virus tends to be lower, although the genome sequence of the case will help in providing information related to understanding the current outbreak.

Health experts are also paying attention to mutations that could make the virus more contagious or severe.

Please note, there are more than 100 suspected and confirmed cases in the recent outbreak in Europe and North America.

“This is a situation that can be controlled, especially in Europe. But we cannot ignore what is happening in Africa, in endemic countries,” said the Leader of Diseases and Zoonoses. WHO and Covid-19 technical lead, Maria van Kerkhove.

According to WHOthese outbreaks occur in countries where the virus does not circulate regularly.

Scientists are also trying to understand the origin of the cases and whether there have been changes to the virus.
