The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adanom Gebreyesus, today called on rich countries with large stockpiles of vaccines against KOVID-19 to refrain from placing third, booster doses until the end of the year, the Associated Press reported.
“I am” shocked “by the statements of some pharmaceutical companies that the quantities of vaccines are so large that they are sufficient for both booster doses and vaccination in countries that are experiencing a shortage of vaccines despite their high needs,” Tedros said. “I will not remain silent when companies and countries that control global vaccine supplies think that the world’s poor will be content with leftovers,” he said.
The WHO Director-General has previously called for a moratorium on the delivery of third doses of vaccines by the end of this month. However, the United States and other countries are considering or have already begun to increase doses to vulnerable groups, the AP notes.
