WHO: Mass Monkeypox Vaccination Not Needed

This month, more than 140 cases have been confirmed and suspected in 12 countries across Europe, North America and Oceania.

Monkeypox was first detected in the UK on 7 May. The number of cases there also grew rapidly and doubled in just two days from nine infections on May 18 to 20 infections on May 20.

Other cases of monkeypox were also recently confirmed in the US, Australia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Sweden.

In Indonesia itself, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) said that until now there have been no cases of monkeypox that entered the territory of Indonesia. However, the level of vigilance at the entrances or border gates continues.

“Until today we have no cases (monkeypox or monkeypox),” said Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Mohammad Syahril, SpP to Health Liputan6.com by telephone on Monday, May 23, 2022.

Even so, Syahril said the government remained vigilant. Not only Indonesia, but all countries in the world are wary of this disease which is usually transmitted from animals to humans (zoonosis).

“We must be vigilant, still yes, not only Indonesia but all of them, because this disease is contagious and can be transmitted from people who enter from infected countries,” said Syahril again.
