WHO launches WhatsApp chat function for information about coronavirus | NOW

The World Health Organization (WHO) started a chat function via WhatsApp on Friday in collaboration with Facebook. Users with questions about the coronavirus can, among other things, view the latest official figures and get answers to the most frequently asked questions.

The WHO Health Alert can be reached by ‘Hiapp to the special phone number +41 798 931 892 or click on this link.

You will then be presented with a menu of options, including one with the most frequently asked questions such as what are the symptoms of COVID-19 and how to deal with stress during the outbreak.

There is also a segment with false information that the WHO likes to rectify. The coronavirus is not spread through mosquito bites, for example. Also, there is no evidence that eating garlic, no matter how healthy, does not help protect yourself from the virus.

The messaging service has the potential to reach 2 billion people and, according to the WHO, is for everyone: from leaders of countries and health professionals to family and friends.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezing and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
  • Read here what precautions you should take.
