Adros Gebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, has criticized the widespread use of a booster dose of coronavirus vaccine amid low levels of vaccination in low-income countries.
He described as scandalous the fact that the daily number of booster vaccines given was six times the number of first-dose people in low-income countries.
According to Gebreyesus, there is no point in giving boosted doses to healthy people or vaccinating children when, at the same time, health workers, the elderly and people from other vulnerable groups are still waiting for their first dose. Exceptions are people with weakened immunity.
He found that the countries with the highest levels of vaccination continued to stockpile even more vaccines against COVID-19, while low-income countries continued to wait. There are only two countries in the world that have not yet started vaccination – Eritrea and North Korea.
