WHO Issues Urgent Warning About Global Cholera Outbreak Linked to Climate Change and Calls for Increased Financing

Although cholera cases are emerging in more than 30 countries around the world, the African and Middle Eastern regions are the most affected, with 25,424 new cases of cholera in 16 countries in the those areas, in March only.

“As the effects of climate change worsen, the situation can be expected to worsen if we do not act now to prevent the spread of cholera,” said Philippe Barboza, WHO member responsible for fight against cholera.

Although the WHO has allocated $ 16 million to emergency funds against cholera from 2022 and this month approved the vaccine Euvichol-S, it indicates that more funding is needed to fight this health crisis.

“Vaccines alone will not solve the problem. “Clean water, sanitation and hygiene are the only sustainable, long-term solutions to end this cholera crisis and prevent future ones,” Barboza said.
