Mental health is a topic that in recent years has begun to take center stage in the world of sport, starting to be seen as something worthy of attention outside of competitive contexts. Proof of this is the case of the 22-year-old player Tyrell Terry, who has been playing in the NBA since 2020 and who announced his retirement as a professional, giving priority to his health.
Next, we tell you all about her career and decision.
He is a native of Valley City in North Dakota who excelled with DeLaSalle High School as a basketball player from an early age. After four years of high school, he was recruited by Stanford University and stood out there as one of its great figures in 2019-20, posting 14.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He was named to the PAC-12 All-Rookie Team.
After his only year at the varsity level, he went through the process to enter the 2020 NBA Draft, distinguishing himself with his intelligence and breaking the record for the league’s standardized test for intelligence quotient (IQ). He was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 31st position of the second round, being one of the best triplers in his class.
The Mavericks found no place for his first-team development and sent him to the G League, adding a few games on and off with the NBA main team, but with just 11 appearances off the bench, he was finally released in October of 2021. The Memphis Grizzlies brought him into their discipline, but he was once again fired after just two games.
Things have not gone well for Terry over the years, as beyond his early successes and the opportunity to play in the NBA, he has revealed that he has also involved very difficult moments in his life, especially in terms of mental health and how it affected their family members.
“I’ve accomplished amazing things, but I’ve also experienced the darkest moments of my life. I was dealing with mental health issues that affect my family and I wasn’t really aware of it. I will be known by many as a failure, but there there’s so much more to me in this vast world and I’m excited to explore it,” Terry said in a statement.
