With a plethora of blue lights and the sound of skidding wheels, the wait is over. A green military car stops abruptly in front of the entrance to the military hospital in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine. A soldier jumps out of the passenger seat and tears open the back door. Four men run to lift out the stretcher. The soldier lying there cries out in pain. His neck is covered with bandages. Held in place by a tour to stop the bleeding below.

Inside the hospital, military doctor Vitaly Malentsjuk (43) is waiting to receive him. Blood and shouting notwithstanding, this is far from the worst he has seen in the last four months.
