“The Harris-Walz pair will be a powerful voice for America’s working and middle classes.” They will be the strongest defenders of personal freedom and our democracy. country.” said the 81-year-old president.
Democratic Party’s Biden is supporting Harris and her vice-presidential candidate after he decided to withdraw from the US election last month.
Who is Tim Walz?
Walz, 60, was a former teacher and member of the US National Guard. His profile rose recently after he attacked Republican candidates Donald Trump and Vance as “weird.” The insult then went viral and was adopted by Harris’ campaign team.
Walz is also a strong supporter of labor unions, which are an important part of the Democratic Party’s electoral coalition. President Joe Biden and former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly agreed on Walz as Harris’ vice presidential choice.
“Governor Walz not only has the experience to be vice president, he has the values and integrity to make us proud,” wrote former President Barack Obama in statement after Walz was selected by Harris.
By choosing Walz, Harris hopes to attract more working-class and midwestern voters who could help her win against Donald Trump in the November general election. .
Walz’s interests in hunting, fishing, conservation and American football may appeal to voters living in rural areas of the US heartland.
Donald Trump’s campaign on Monday called Walz a “dangerous liberal terrorist”. Trump has chosen Republican Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate.
Harris-Walz is campaigning in key states
Harris and Walz campaigned Tuesday in the Pennsylvania city of Philadelphia, beginning a five-day tour of key swing states. These are states with a large number of electoral votes, which will likely determine the outcome of the election.
In addition to Philadelphia, Harris and Walz will visit five other cities, namely Eau Claire, Detroit, Durham, Phoenix and Las Vegas.
This news was released after Harris was officially nominated for the Democratic presidential nomination on Monday night (05/08), making her the first woman of color to lead a major party.
The nominations became official after delegates to the Democratic National Convention completed a five-day round of online voting.
The Democrats said that 99% of the delegates who voted had chosen Harris. Official clarification of voting results will come before the victory is announced at the party conference later this month in Chicago.
Harris received the nomination as the Democratic presidential candidate after a tumultuous period that began with Joe Biden’s failed performance in a televised debate against Donald Trump in June.
Biden then announced that he was retiring and ‘passing the torch’ of the election to Harris.
