56-year-old veteran of the Israeli secret services is the new head of foreign intelligence – Mossad, announced BNT. David Barnea will succeed Josi Cohen early next month, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office said.
Cohen retired after five years devoted mainly to working in the Arab world from the Persian Gulf. So last year, Israel reached peace agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
David Barnea joined Mossad in 1996. Until his appointment as deputy director in 2019, he was responsible for the recruitment and management of agents, mainly in the Iranian priority area and the Hezbollah group.
Iran has accused Mossad of killing leading Iranian nuclear scientists and sabotaging its nuclear facilities. Israel claims that the Islamic Republic is developing an atomic bomb. Tehran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.
Under Israeli military censorship rules, Barnea’s name and position can only be announced after the prime minister’s office announces his appointment. Israel did not disclose the names of Mossad agents, with the exception of the head of the service.
