★★★ 1/2 The history of masks dates back thousands of years. They were used to terrorize the enemy, tell stories or just for fun. They transform the wearer and generate mystery. The landing of “Who’s the Mask?” the new bet of the prime time of Phone, a local adaptation of the South Korean format “The king of masked singers”, it seeks just that, a break with reality, especially when Argentine viewers urgently need to be entertained.
The cycle, also known as “Mysterious music show”, after its release in 2015 it became a worldwide success with versions on all continents. In the United States, through Volpeto quote one of the most emblematic cases, it accumulates seven consecutive seasons in the limited period from 2019 to today.
The mechanics are as follows: famous dressed competitors extravagant costumes who hide them in a fantastic character because, a priori, we don’t know the name of any of them. When they show up they give clues to their identity, with distorted voice, in an introductory video. Then they perform a live song, accompanied by an ensemble of dancers, and the four speakers try to guess who they are. The studio audience votes for his favorites and in the end, from among the three with the lowest marks, a competitor is chosen to unmask him.
The Argentine replica has twenty-four “famous” (by the way, a term that is usually applied here indiscriminately) and the impeccable guide of beauty Natalia Oreiro, with all his charisma, spontaneity and freshness, in a welcome television return.
