Who is
Mohammed Ismail Darwish, known as Abu Omar Hassan, is the chairman of the Advisory Council of Hamas. He will temporarily take on the role of head of the political wing after the movement agreed to choose an interim replacement until a new leader is elected.
Last Saturday, Hamas announced the start of a broad consultation, within its leadership and advisory bodies, for the selection of a new head of its political office.
According to the movement’s constitution, the members of the Central Consultative Council, which consists of approximately 50 members, including members of the movement’s central political office, are the ones who elect the president.
Haniya was the head of the political office of the movement until his assassination. His deputy Saleh Al-Arouri, who was killed in an Israeli raid in Beirut in January, was supposed to replace him, but the post remained vacant after his death.
Whoever succeeds Haniya, experts believe he will not affect how Hamas conducts its war against Israel in the Gaza Strip, where leaders such as Yahya Al-Sinwar largely independently direct operations during duration of the conflict.
