Who is the electable? – View Info – 2024-09-09 00:48:05

/ world today news/ At the session of the National Assembly of the BSP on Saturday, December 17, Kiril Dobrev, leading the discussion on the point about the criteria and procedures for the promotion of the party’s candidates for people’s representatives, launched two definitely discussion theses.

The first one. According to the speaker, the answer to the question of who is the electable candidate in a majority election, for example in the north-eastern part of the country – the grocer who holds the people’s opinions, or the teacher – is categorically and unequivocally clear: of course, the grocer! Life-wise, this response is probably well-founded, given the overwhelming crisis suffocating the vast majority of those left to live there.

OK, but is this observation enough to end the question of who the BSP should field as its candidate in the next elections? In fact, are we sure that people’s attitudes are so unequivocally predetermined that even among those most affected by the crisis, the expectation and aspiration for a life freed from the pressure of lack of income is not alive? And that they would not recognize in the teacher the bearer of this hope?

The second. That in fact the only and most important thing is that our candidate is electable – and that’s it! Yes, but what are we really running a candidate for – just to sit in his seat in the 44th National Assembly? And what happens in the first controversial votes, where the choice is between material (personal?) interest and public, public interest?

Returning to the issue of unpaid and unpayable debts of people in villages and towns, is it not appropriate for the BSP to come up with a pre-election proposal for a measure, read in the state budget, for a one-time write-off of the sums owed by people living in poverty or in risk of such accumulated until a certain date, so as not to abuse such a one-time measure? There are precedents – a similar experience is known in other European countries.
And at the same time – to raise a parallel proposal for a special law on the status of the teacher in the educational institution and in society with all guarantees for material and personal security, professional development and public recognition.

To see what people’s attitudes actually are or would be when deciding who to support and for what. The questions are far from rhetorical. In a broader context, they go to the heart of the mood and intent with which the party heads into the extremely serious tests of the coming weeks and months.

In the sub-zero temperatures in Positano’s boardroom last Saturday, the inclination towards more concentrated thinking and debating was clearly also nearing zero. But we are obliged to realize that the extraordinary tests that lie ahead of us oblige us to engage in the most serious possible discussion of the questions with whom and for what we are going to seek the support and trust of today’s Bulgarian citizens, so strongly disgusted by corruption and the salesmanship!
