After the suffered debut with Jarry, Jannik Sinner returns to the field in Beijing to face the lucky loser Roman Safiullin who made the best possible use of the repechage in the main draw (he had been eliminated in the last qualifying round in three sets by Bautista Agut, ndr) defeating Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. The Russian, n. 36 in January, is having a mediocre season which, not surprisingly, has caused him to slip to no. 69 in the world. To win a tournament he had to go to the Challenger circuit, triumphing in August in Cary where he defeated Mattia Bellucci 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in a daring final, recovering from 1-4 in the second in which he also had to cancel two match point (at 4-5).
Sinner is ahead 2-0 in previous games
The precedents go to Sinner who beat him on both occasions that he faced him. In 2022 the two faced each other in January in Sydney in the first singles of the ATP Cup between Italy and Russia (which the Azzurri lost 1-2, ed.) and the South Tyrolean won 7-6 (8/6), 6- 3 canceling three set-points in the first partial. The second match, much more prestigious, took place on the grass of Wimbledon in 2023: it was a quarter-final match and Sinner won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
