Who is Raygun, the breakdance athlete who did the kangaroo step? – El Financiero

How stupid, give her a zero! Rachael Gunn arrived in Paris 2024 to take part in the first breakdancing event at the Olympic Games, but her participation ended without any points to advance.

Gunn, also known as B-girl Raygun, has gone viral on social media, where she has been questioned about how she managed to make it to the Olympics.

Who is Rachael Gunn, breakdancing athlete?

Rachael is a 36-year-old university lecturer from Sydney, Australia, who specializes in research on breaking, street dance, and hip-hop culture. Her PhD thesis focuses on the intersection of gender and hip-hop culture in her city.

Raygun also represented Australia at the 2021 and 2022 World Championships, before securing Olympic qualification at the 2023 Oceania Championships.

“All my moves are original. Creativity is very important to me. I jump out there and show my art. Sometimes the judges like it and sometimes they don’t. I do my thing and that represents art. That’s what it’s all about,” said the athlete after competing in Paris.

What was Rachael Gunn’s competition like at Paris 2024?

Rachael Gunn showed up in her green and gold Australian uniform and participated in three matches, where she performed a kangaroo hop, a backflip and several prone body twists.

Despite her enthusiasm, she failed to score a single point in her three bouts and lost 18-0 on each occasion. The Australian faced Logistx, France’s Syssy and Lithuania’s Nick.

What was the breaking competition format like?

Competitors participated in elimination rounds, where a total of 32 breakers, 16 women and men, competed on a circular stage, which was accompanied by music from a DJ and a master of ceremonies.

The athletes competed against each other and at the end of the three events the points were added up to determine the next qualifiers. Each category represented 15 to 20 percent of the final score.

The panel was made up of members of the World Dance Federation, where the judging criteria include technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality and originality.
