Mary Lou McDonald entered politics by joining Sinn Fein, for which she campaigned in the Irish parliamentary elections in 2002.
Two years after succeeding her mentor Gerry Adams at the head of Sinn Feid, Mary Lou McDonald succeeded last Saturday in winning the popular vote in the parliamentary elections in Ireland (24.2%). His party, long regarded as sour because of its ties to the Irish Republican Army (IRA), became the second strongest force in the Irish parliament, ahead of the two centrist parties that traditionally share power.
