At least three players deserve to be substitutes Marcelino Ferdinando as one of the strengths Indonesia National Under 20 team.
Talent is hard to match, but quality can be formed and built. This is how Shin Tae Yong saw Marselino Ferdinand’s vital position in the Indonesian Under-20 national team.
When he appeared in the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup, Marcelino became the backbone. He started the first three games. Unfortunately, the Persebaya Surabaya player got injured in the match against Thailand.

The absence of Marcelino had caused concern. But Shin Tae Yong wisely said the situation could be overcome. The proof is that Garuda Nusantara won 5-1 against the Philippines in the fourth match of the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup.
The game of Muhammad Ferrarri and his friends did not slow down when they met Myanmar in the final of Group A. The lineup developed by Shin however made Indonesia U-19 explosive and he won with a score of 5- 1.
As aware of Marselino’s vital role, Shin continued to devise schemes and strategies. After appearing in the 2023 Asian Cup U-20 qualifiers, Marselino remained a mainstay, but his role was not as vital as in the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup.
Facing East Timor, Marselino only played 63 minutes. Later against Hong Kong, the 18-year-old only appeared in the 80th minute. In this match Marcelino scored two goals.
Finally, in the face of Vietnam, most of the predictions were wrong. Not many expected Marselino to be taught by Shin Tae Yong. Oktafianus’ caged brother Fernando just played in the second half replacing Ronaldo Kwateh.
The entry of Marselino increased the explosiveness of Indonesia’s U-20. In the 60th minute, through a combination of structured attacks, the player who was included in the Guardian’s list of 100 future young players scored a goal.
Since the AFF U-19 2022 Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup U-20 qualification, it cannot be denied that Marselino’s role is very broad. However, it also appears that Shin Tae Yong actually has a “plan B” to play without Marselino.
Referring to Indonesia’s last six U-20 games, from against Thailand in the AFF U-19 Cup to against Vietnam in the U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers, there are three names the South Korean manager is currently working on. to become the new strength of Indonesia.
The first is Zanadin Fariz, the second is Arsa Ahmad and the third is Alfriyanto Nico. If you look at the turnover trend, Zanadin is the best prepared.
Bekasi’s Persis Solo player usually comes in to replace Marselino or vice versa. His duet with Arkhan Fikri also started solidly.
For Arsa Ahmad, it’s still a trial and error. This player is the same as Rafli Asrul or Ferdiansyah Cecep who wants to see the effect when given the opportunity. Visually, these players don’t look great.
Finally there is Nico. This player from Persija is actually more positioned as a winger, unlike Marcelino. However, Nico’s presence gave a different color once Arkhan and Zanadin duet as midfield generals.
Considering that there are still more than six months to go until the 2023 Under-20 World Cup, there is the possibility that a new figure will appear as a replacement for Marselino Ferdinand.
The competition is taking place with the faces of the young players, plus the Elite Pro Academy is a means of finding the “new Marcelino”.
