Who is Franco Alfieri, the mayor and president of the Province arrested for corruption

The arrest this morning caused a sensation, accused of corruption and rigged tenders Franco Alfieri. But who is the president of the Province of Salerno e mayor of the Municipality of Capaccio Paestum? Certainly one of the most popular characters in the Salerno area and beyond. Historical exponent of Democratic Party but above all very loyal to the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca.

Alfieri, 59 years old, was first citizen of Torchiara (municipality of where it originates), then of Agropoli (where he served two terms) and Capaccio Paestum where he was elected in 2019 for the first time and just a few months away for the second time. Alfieri is though became “famous” at a national level for the phrases that the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca uttered during a meeting on constitutional referendum of 2016 in which several local administrators participated. To encourage the administrators to engage in the referendum campaign, De Luca essentially invited them to take the example of Franco Alfieri whose ability to gather consensus in the area: «Here, Alfieri’s commitment will be to get half of his fellow citizens to vote, 4 thousand people out of 8 thousand. I want to see them en masse, armed, with flags going to the polls to vote ‘Yes’. Franco, you see what you have to do, offer a fried fish, take them on boats, on yachts, do as you want, but don’t come here with one vote less than those you promised».
