In the end, the white smoke has arrived for the Lucanian center-left. The wide field has found its candidate. It will be Dr Domenico Lacerenza66 years old, ophthalmologist from Venosa of Barletta origins and currently head of the ophthalmology department of the San Carlo hospital in Potenza to bring together the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement for the next regional elections in Basilicata.
The agreement between the two opposition parties came after yet another long day of negotiations between Conte, Schlein and the Lucanian representatives of the parties that will form the coalition that decreed the step backwards of Angelo Chiorazzocandidate in the first instance from Basilicata Casa Comune for the wide field.
Lacerenza, who boasts a long and prestigious curriculum in the medical field, does not have a past as a political militant and proposes himself as a “secular” solution to the tug of war within the Lucanian left.
Having graduated with top marks and magna cum laude from the University of Bari in 1983, he specializes in Ophthalmology. After a few years of apprenticeship during which he served as an assistant in the hospitals of Lucera and Barletta, he became, in 1999, second level medical director at the San Francesco hospital in Venosa, the city in which he currently resides.
In the same hospital he then held the role of head of the specialist surgery department of the health authority, at the time still a local health authority, of the city of Horace before approaching politics from outside: during the period of presidency of Filippo Bubbico (L’Ulivo and Left Democrats) supported the then regional health councilor as a consultant from 2000 to 2003 with a role aimed at drafting the “Regional guidelines on day surgery”.
After this experience which only touched on regional politics, Lacerenza received an assignment from the clinical-organizational governance of the hospital and territorial ophthalmology activities of the Asp, a health company in Potenza, also holding the positions of department director of both specialist surgeries and surgical acuities. In 2013, he then became director of the regional inter-company Ophthalmology department and, finally, since 2015 he has held the same position for the San Carlo di Potenza.
“For me, who have always dedicated myself to the profession of full-time doctor, it is my first political position: I will do my best to be up to it”, Lacerenza immediately commented.
The only issue to be resolved for the new broad Lucanian camp remains that relating to the centrist parties, Action and Italia Viva, in fact, they have not yet revealed their cards with a Marcello Pitella (former governor of the Democratic Party now with Calenda) who, critical of Chiorazzo’s candidacy, could now choose to get on the center-left bandwagon.
