Tesla got an unpleasant surprise at the beginning of the second half of 2022. They are no longer the best-selling electric car brand in the world. His position was taken over by BYD, an electric car manufacturer from the Bamboo Curtain country.
Previously reported, Tesla’s throne as the number one seller of electric cars in the world was lost in the first half of 2022. The electric car made by Elon Musk was recorded to have sold 564,000 vehicles from January to June 2022.
On the other hand, BYD recorded sales of 641,350 in the same period. BYD’s sales figures include battery, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen vehicles.

For the record, many consider Tesla’s comparison with BYD to be not entirely fair. Because Tesla only sells electric cars (BEV). While BYD also sells plug-in hybrid cars and hydrogen vehicles. However, BYD’s success is considered as the beginning of their success in being able to dominate the world’s electric car sales in the future.

BYD’s success overtaking Tesla in sales of renewable energy vehicles is not a surprise. BYD is the largest electric car manufacturer in China today.
The Investors website says Tesla and BYD are now the leaders of the electric car industry. Far outperforming other vehicle manufacturers, such as Ford Motor, General Motors, Volkswagen, as well as many start-ups such as Rivian Automotive, Lucid, Nio, Xpeng, and Li Auto.
BYD China’s Giant Automotive and Electronics Company
BYD Auto (which focuses on vehicle production), is part of the BYD Company. BYD, short for ‘Build Your Dream’, is a publicly listed company headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
The company was founded by Wang Chuanfu in February 1995. Starting in 2003, BYD started producing cars after they acquired Qinchuan Automobile Company.
Actually, BYD does not only produce renewable energy passenger vehicles. They also make and sell buses, trucks, electric bicycles, forklifts, to electric vehicle batteries and solar panels.
Although the competition between BYD and Tesla is getting sharper in electric car sales, BYD is still considered to have an advantage. Not only because of the variety of products. A BYD official said in June that BYD would supply electric vehicle batteries for Tesla.
This year, BYD targets to sell around 1.1 to 1.2 million renewable energy vehicles. This figure could have been achieved considering that in the first half of 2022 they managed to experience an increase in sales of 224% compared to the same period last year.
BYD in Indonesia
Although most of BYD’s sales figures are still in China, they have and continue to expand their market worldwide. After owning several factories in China, BYD also built a factory in Lancaster, California .
In Brazil BYD has had a factory since 2015 to produce electric buses. A bus factory was also built in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. In addition they also have an assembly facility located in Komarom, Hungary.
 PT Blue Bird Tbk launched a taxi service with a fleet of electric cars. Blue Bird became the first transportation company to provide electric taxis. Its newest fleet for Bluebird service uses the BYD e6 A/T brand while the Silverbird, Tesla Model X 75D A/T. BYD is also planned to enter the Indonesian market, although it is not yet known when. At the end of 2021, General Secretary of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO), Kukuh Kumara, said BYD would follow Chery into the Indonesian market.
BYD’s electric car has become quite popular on the streets of Jakarta after the unit was turned into an electric taxi by Blue Bird.
