Who is Anwar Ibrahim who ‘overthrew’ Malaysian PM Muhyiddin?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Malaysian politics are heating up again. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim claims he will create a new government because he has toppled Muhyiddin Yassin’s government.

Anwar said he had obtained a “strong majority” of parliamentarians to form the new government. He will even meet the King of Malaysia, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, to formalize his appointment as prime minister.

But who is Anwar Ibrahim?

Anwar is a controversial Malaysian politician. Born in Bukit Mertajam, August 10, 1947, he was a former deputy prime minister for the period 1993-1998.

Anwar also served as Minister of Finance for Malaysia from 1991 to 1998 when he was a member of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), a major party in the coalition of Barisan Nasional (BN) which was in power at that time.

This 73-year-old man has also served as Leader of the 12th and 16th Opposition since May 2020 and from August 2008 to March 2015. Currently, Anwar is the 2nd President of the People’s Justice Party (PKR) and leader of Pakatan Harapan. (PH) opposition coalition. Anwar has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Port Dickson since 2018.

However, Anwar was jailed for a sodomy scandal and was dishonorably discharged on September 2, 1998. Anwar filed a lawsuit against Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad on charges of defamation for allegedly making immoral charges and calling Anwar a homosexual at a press conference in Malaysia.

At that time, some international observers said Anwar was imprisoned because of his dispute with Mahathir due to the crisis that hit Malaysia in 1997 before.

On September 2, 2004, Anwar was released by Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi. He continued his political career through the Justice Party (PK) and the Malaysian opposition group which contested the 2008 and 2013 general elections. He was the Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2015.

A few years later, exactly on July 16, 2008, Anwar was again arrested on charges of sodomy against one of his personal assistants, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, but he was released a day later after paying bail.

Anwar’s name came back after he said he had been betrayed by his political colleagues in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition in early 2020. This of course managed to dispel Anwar’s hopes of serving as Prime Minister of Malaysia.

But months later, Anwar came back and even claimed control of parliament. With a majority vote, Muhyiddin Yasin is now no longer prime minister.

“Currently, with the amount I have, Muhyiddin is no longer prime minister,” he said.
