The World health Institution (WHO) has dispatched a team of experts to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to investigate a mysterious illness that has emerged in the Panzi region, located in the southwestern province of Kwango.
As of December 6, the WHO’s regional office for Africa reported that the organization’s experts have joined DRC health authorities in Panzi. “Our priority is to provide effective support to affected families and communities,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. “All efforts are underway to identify the cause of the disease, understand its modes of transmission and ensure an appropriate response as quickly as possible.”
The DRC Ministry of Public Health has confirmed 394 cases in the Panzi health zone, with a death toll exceeding 70. Symptoms of the illness include headache, cough, fever, difficulty breathing, and anemia.
“A respiratory pathogen such as influenza or COVID-19 is being investigated as a possible cause, along with malaria, measles and others,” the WHO stated.”Pending laboratory test results, the cause remains unclear.”
Panzi, a rural community situated over 700 kilometers from the capital Kinshasa, faces challenges in accessibility due to limited road infrastructure and a weak communication network.
The WHO’s rapid response underscores the global concern surrounding emerging infectious diseases, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources.
