The World Health Organization has confirmed that nearly half of the world’s population, or 3.5 billion people, suffer from oral diseases, most of them in low- and middle-income countries.

The most common oral disease is tooth decay, acute gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer, with nearly 2.5 billion people affected by untreated tooth decay, the United Nations agency said.

It indicated that about 380,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year, according to Reuters.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that the large expenditure of private funds and the unavailability of highly specialized dental equipment in primary health care settings are among the most important reasons for the high prevalence of oral diseases, especially in poor countries.

While the director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said: “Oral health has long been neglected in global health, but many oral diseases can be prevented.”

The agency has suggested that countries include equitable oral health services as part of their national planning, integrate oral health services into their primary health care models, and improve access to affordable fluoride toothpastes, among others measures.
