Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) provides an updated statement regarding monkeypox disease (monekypox). Currently the rate of disease transmission is in the “moderate risk” category.
This is due to the spread of cases in non-endemic countries. Monkeypox itself is endemic in Africa but is now spreading in Europe, North America, and even Australia.
However, the WHO stressed the risk could turn out to be high. This is especially true when it comes to groups such as children or people with immune disorders.
“Public health risks could be high if this virus seizes the opportunity to establish itself as a human pathogen and spread to groups at higher risk of severe disease such as young children and immunocompromised individuals,” the UN agency said in a statement. 30/5/2022).
As of May 26, there were a total of 257 confirmed cases with 120 suspects, in 23 non-endemic countries. No deaths have been reported yet.
Monkeypox is usually spread through close contact. Those infected are advised to self-isolate and maintain hygiene.
