Due to the omikron variant, the end of the corona epidemic may be in sight in Europe. That says Hans Kluge, the European director of the World Health Organization. According to Kluge, 60% of Europeans could have had an infection with omikron by March.
That, in combination with the immunity that has been built up through the vaccines, and the prospect of spring, can ensure that few new infections are added for months.
Kluge does call for caution for the time being, and points out the unpredictability of the virus. According to him, there is currently no question of an “endemic era” of the virus, in which it becomes much more predictable what will happen.
