As Jesus Christ walked through Galilee and performed miracles, a woman named Mary Magdalene asked him for help. He cast seven demons out of her and healed her.
Mary followed him until his death on the cross, was the first to see the risen Lord and comforted his disciples with the joyful words: “Christ is risen!”. As the first evangelist, she was recognized as an equal apostle.
Her name was Mary and she was born in Magdala. That is why she was later called Mary Magdalene.

She is not the forgiven sinner who anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair, as St. Luke the Evangelist tells us. Immediately after the story of this unnamed sinner (“… a woman from the city who was a sinner, see Luke 7:37), Luke mentions St. Mary Magdalene by name with the words” Mary, called Magdalene, by whom (Luke 8: 2). It is clear from the text that Mary Magdalene was one of many other women whom Jesus “healed from evil spirits and diseases … and who served Him with their possessions” ( Luke 8: 2).
The confusion of St. Mary Magdalene with the forgiven sinner is not recent – it dates back to the end of the VI century and is mainly due to a misinterpretation of St. Gregory the Great. The mixing of different women with the name Maria is especially common in the West.
Today is a name day celebrated by all bearing the names Magdalena, Magdalena, Magda, Magdalen, Madeleine, Madeleine, Meglena, Miglena, Lina and Lena.
