“It is too early for any country to give up or declare victory. The virus is dangerous and continues to grow before our eyes,” the WHO director general said to reporters.
Today, Denmark became the first country in the European Union (EU) to: lifted all restrictions, which was definitely a battle with Covid-19, although the virus continues to spread rapidly. Several other countries are considering doing the same.
The WHO is concerned that the message that the transmission of coronavirus transmission is no longer possible or necessary due to the high stickiness and lower risk of the vaccine and the omicron strain of the virus has become stronger in several countries.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Tedross said, stressing that more morbidity means more deaths.
He said the omicron strain of the virus was first detected in southern Africa ten weeks ago and that nearly 90 million cases have been reported to the WHO since then, more than all the cases in 2020.
And although the omicron form is milder, deaths have risen in most parts of the world, Tedros said.
He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
“We are not calling on any country to return to quarantine,” Tedros said, adding that he was calling on all countries to protect their populations with all the tools at their disposal, not just vaccines.
The WHO has emphasized the need to continue to monitor new strains of Covid-19, including the omicron subtype BA.2.
“This virus will continue to evolve, so we encourage countries to continue testing, monitoring and sequencing. (..) We cannot fight the virus without knowing what it is doing,” the WHO Director-General said.
