Who dies in the “House Of The Dragon” ending? The End of Episode 10 and Rhaenyra’s Decision Explained – Series News

House Of The Dragon Season Finale Spoiler! In episode 10 of the Game of Thrones prequel, we see Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar, killing Lucerys Velaryon and her dragon Arrax in flight. An accident? Definitely an event with consequences …

The first season of “Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon” is over and in the last minutes it has claimed another victim: Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), 14 years old. Anyone familiar with George RR Martin’s “Fire and Blood” may have known that this deadly confrontation occurs in episode 10: Lucerys dies in a fight between his dragon Arrax and Aemond Targaryens (Ewan Mitchell) much larger dragon Vhagar.

Aemond and Luke, as he is known by his mother Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), are sent to Borror Baratheon (Roger Evans) after Storm’s End to take House Baratheon to their respective parts. Aemond is successful, but it’s not enough for him: he tells Lucerys to cut his eye because he lost an eye to Lucerys. By the way, in case you were wondering, there is a sapphire in Aemond’s empty orbit. Lucerys flies away to Arrax, Aemond follows him to Vhagar and a chase ensues, in which the young soon lose control of their dragons …

In the series an accident, in the book probably on purpose

Arrax attacks Vhagar with fire, despite Lucerys trying to keep him in check. For the huge Vhagar, however, such a small jet of flame in the face is not dangerous at all, but he feels provoked. Although his dragon rider Aemond shouts “No!” and requires obedience, eats Vhagar in flight Arrax and his rider Lucerys. Aemond appears dismayed and distraught: the series clearly characterizes Lucerys’ death as a tragic accident.

It is different in George RR Martin’s book, where Aemond’s intention appears to have been to kill Lucerys in the mid-air duel with the dragon. Either way, it’s an accident with horrific consequences … because when Daemon (Matt Smith) walks up to the fire with Rhaenyra in the last scene and tells her about his son’s death (we don’t hear the words, but her reaction makes it clear what is happening), the queen makes a decision.

And this decision can be read on his face, which can be seen in the latest take of the episode “The Black Queen”: Rhaenyra has hesitated so far against rival king Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and the Greens around Otto and Alicent Hightower / Hohenturm has decided to go to war in order not to turn the kingdom into a “kingdom of ashes and bones”. The death of his son Lucerys is the straw that breaks the camel’s camel: this means war.

The civil war begins

Rhaenyra’s decision, although speechless in the season finale, is confirmed by the creators of the series in the Inside The Episode video on YouTube: “If crowning Aegon as king did not start the war, it will surely be that one of the queen’s sons was killed. “

So in season 2 we see the civil war called Dance of the Dragons after season 1 tells the backstory. Season 2 of House of the Dragon will be shot from the beginning of 2023, we don’t expect the next episodes to start until 2024.
