WHO declares smallpox a global public health emergency | RYT9

World Health Organization (WHO) announced today (August 14) that the outbreak of monkeypox or mpox is considered a health emergency.public healthon a global scale amid concerns about the international spread of the outbreak.

The news comes just a day after the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced the presence of smallpox in Africa. It is a public health emergency on the continent (PHECS).

Dr. Jean Caseya, director of the African CDC, announced the state of emergency yesterday. and expressed concern about the rapid spread of mpox from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to other countries.

Dr. Kasaya said: Declaring a state of emergency for PHECS will help mobilize more resources and funding to contain the outbreak. It also requires African Union member countries to report progress to the Africa CDC on implementing outbreak control measures.
