JENEWA.NIAGA.ASIA — The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is ending its public health emergency declaration for mpoxa viral disease formerly known as monkeypox.
On Thursday 11 May 2023, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the end of the public health emergency status which worried the world for this disease.
Mpox is a viral infection that causes a number of symptoms, such as fever and rash. The disease has rarely been detected outside of Africa before.
“A WHO report shows that more than 87,000 cases mpox confirmed in 111 countries and regions from early 2022 to March this year. The death toll stands at 140,” he was quoted as saying niaga.asia from news agency reports NHKFriday 12 May 2023.
WHO said more than 7,500 cases were reported in the week that started on August 8 last year. This is a global peak. It added that the number of weekly cases had fallen to a little over 100 in recent months.
“Meanwhile, mpox was confirmed in Japan since the beginning of this year. The Japanese Ministry of Health calls on people suspected of having these symptoms to be examined by a doctor immediately,” the report said NHK.
